Earthtime

I watched this DVD a couple of weeks ago. Earthtime was an insightful film about how geochronologists tell the age of rocks. It use the scientific method to tell how they go about this challenging task. I felt this made allowed me to understand what CIRDLES is all about and what our research will mostly involve. It was interesting to see how scientists work as well.

 This is my picture that will appear on the CIRDLES research site. This image will allow people to know I am now on the CIRDLES team and will also include contact information by it in case someone needs to reach me I am currently uploading this photo to Playground.

I have been reading and taking notes about subversion, so I am excited to see what I can learn from others revisions while using Playground.

I did not know anything about subversion coming into CIRDLES. But I learned that it a "free/open source version control system"(VCS).

It manages files and directories, and changes made to them, over time. This will be useful to me when I start projects.

The bulk of my reading about subversion has been about the most efficient ways I can work with others on projects without deleting their work. I know this reading is important to me working well with others on my research here with CIRDLES. So I am making sure I do not miss anything while reading this in depth overview of this important tool. 

Here is an image of some of my notes. I have colored coordinated them according to section. I then highlighted key words that I felt I would need to know in the future.

Workspace and Mac Interface.

This is my new work space. It contains dual monitors and a track ball mouse. The dual monitors helps me alot when I want to work in multiple applications at once.

The trackball was hard to get used to at first, but I got the hang of it quickly. I prefer it now to non-trackball mouses.

One of the main aspects of my workspace, that cannot be ignored, is the fact that my computer is a Mac. Although it's recent popularity I am not familiar with working on this operating system. One of my first assignments is to get familiar with the Mac OS.

So recently, I have been teaching myself alot about it and I am starting to become more and more comfortable with its interface. I have been learning about how to delete files and save files. I have also been learning about where different applications are located. I am also learning about the different names of things on Mac as oppose to Windows.

I am enjoying this assignment the most, because I know alot of people have made the switch to Macs so If i learn to use them I will be more versatile.

CIRDLES Research Start.

My name is Lisa Smith and I have recently been added to the CIRDLES team here at the College of Charleston.

I am going to be learning alot during the course of working on this project. So I will post everything new I learn about this blog.

I will also be updating this blog with pictures of my assignments and my progress with those assignments.
